Working from Home

Here you will find some basic instructions on how to connect to NVU resources to allow you to work from home.

*Please note, if you do not have a University issued device(e.g. a laptop), you must connect to both the VPN and then remote into to your Office computer. If you have a University issued device, you can just connect to the VPN.*

Forwarding your Office Phone to your Personal Phone – Mitel 5320e

To setup call forwarding from your office extension, please follow the instructions below:

  • Press the blue button above the (red)hold button
  • Click the button next to Settings
  • Click the button next to Programmable Keys
  • Select a button that is not assigned/no text
  • Click the button next to View Applications
  • Click the button next to Call Forwarding
  • Click the button next to Save
  • Click the button next to Click Close
  • Click the button next to Click Close
  • The key you previously selected should now be labeled Forwarding (OFF)
  • Click the button next to Forwarding (OFF)
  • Click the button next to Edit Default
  • Click the button next to Always
  • Type your cell number by adding an 8 to the begging to dial an outside line(88025555555)
  • If your cell number is long distance from the college add 81, before your area code. 8 to dial an outside line and 1 for a long distance call.
  • Click the button next to OK
  • Click the button next to Save
  • Click the button next to Activate
  • The button should say Forwarding (Default). Which means forwarding is on.

To Turn Call Forwarding On/Off:

  • To turn forwarding off, Click the button next to Forwarding (Default)
    • Click the button next to Deactivate
    • The button should now change to Forwarding (Off). Which means forwarding is off
  • To Turn forwarding back on simply click the button next to Forwarding (Off)
    • Click the button next to Activate
    • The button should now change to Forwarding (Default), which means forwarding is on

Connecting to the VPN – Windows 10

To setup the VPN connection, please follow the instructions below:

  • Select the Start  button, then select Settings  > Network & Internet  > VPN > Add a VPN connection.
  • In Add a VPN connection, do the following:
    • For VPN provider, choose Windows (built-in).
    • In the Connection name box, enter a name you’ll recognize (for example, My Personal VPN). This is the VPN connection name you’ll look for when connecting. We suggest, VSC VPN or NVU VPN.
    • In the Server name or address box, enter the address for the VPN server.  If you do not know the name of the VPN server please contact us and we will provide it to you.
    • For VPN type, set it to automatic.
    • For Type of sign-in info, choose, username and password. (You do not need to enter anything in the username and password fields at this time)
  • Click Save
  • If you need to edit the VPN connection info or specify additional settings, such as the proxy settings, choose the VPN connection and then select Advanced options.

To connect to the VPN, please follow the instructions below:

  • On the far right of the taskbar, select the Network icon.
  • Select the VPN connection you want to use, then do either of the following depending on what happens when you select the VPN connection:
    • If the Connect button displays under the VPN connection, select Connect.
    • If VPN in Settings opens, select the VPN connection there, then select Connect.
  • When you’re prompted, enter your NVU username(please enter your username in the following format: username@nvu.vsc.edu) and password.

When connected, the VPN connection name will display Connected underneath it. To see if you’re connected to the VPN while you’re doing things on your PC, select the Network icon on the far right of the taskbar, then see if the VPN connection says Connected.

When you are done working, please make sure to disconnect from the VPN. Only connect to the VPN if you need to access NVU or VSC resources not available from off site.

Connecting to the VPN – MacOS


To connect to the NVU Wi-Fi network from a Mac device, please follow the instructions below:

  • On your Mac, choose the Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network
  • Click the Add button(+) in the list at the left, Click the Interface pop-up menu, then choose VPN
  • For VPN Type, choose L2TP over IPSec
  • For Service name, enter VSC VPN or NVU VPN.
  • Make sure to select the VPN from the left menu
  • Fill out the Server address. (If you do not know the server address, please contact us and we will provide it to you if you have been approved to work from home)
  • For account name enter, the following username@nvu.vsc.edu(e.g. abc12345@nvu.vsc.edu
  • Next click Authentication Settings
    • Under User Authentication, leave the password blank. This allows you to be prompted to enter your password each time you connect to the VPN. (If you enter your password here, and then your password changes in the future, you will have to manually change your password by navigating back here)
    • Under Machine Authentication enter the Shared Secret. (If you do not know the the shared secret, please contact us and we will provide it to you if you have been approved to work from home)
  • Click OK
  • Select the check box, Show VPN status in menu bar
  • Click apply.

When you are done working, please make sure to disconnect from the VPN. Only connect to the VPN if you need to access NVU or VSC resources not available from off site.

Connecting to your Office Computer with Remote Desktop


To connect to your Office computer from home after connecting to the VPN, please follow the instructions below:

  • On your local Windows 10 PC: In the search box on the taskbar, type Remote Desktop Connection, and then select Remote Desktop Connection. In Remote Desktop Connection, type the name of the PC(If you do not know your computer name, please contact us!) you want to connect to, and then select Connect
  • On your Windows, Android, or iOS device: Open the Remote Desktop app (available for free from Microsoft Store, Google Play, and the Mac App Store), and add the name of the PC(If you do not know your computer name, please contact us!)that you want to connect to. Select the remote PC name that you added, and then wait for the connection to complete. 
  • On your Local MacOS Device: Download the Microsoft Remote Desktop client from the Mac App Store.
    • In the Connection Center, click +, and then click Desktop.
    • Enter the following information:
      • PC Name(the name of your PC, if you do not know the name of your PC please contact us!)
      • User Account: enter your NVU username in the following format, username@nvu.vsc.edu(e.g. abc12345@nuv.vsc.edu)
    • Click Save.
  • To Start the connection, just double click the connection.

*When asked for your username please use, username@nvu.vsc.edu(e.g. abc12345@nuv.vsc.edu)*

Checking your Work Extensions Voicemail Remotely

To check your messages remotely, please follow the instructions below

  • Call your office extension
  • Wait for your voicemail to pick up
  • Once your voicemail picks up, hit *
  • Enter your mailboxes Password
